In 2002-03 he played for the New York Rangers playing along the sides with the likes of Mark Messier and Eric Lindros. The following year he played with the L.A. Kings.  After the 2004-05 NHL lockout, John decided to go to Europe, playing in the DEL, German Elite League. At this time he also played for the German National Team, competing in 6 world championships and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

After playing 19 successful seasons professionally he decided to retire and transition into coaching. He spent two seasons in Germany and one in the UK.  Now with a family, he has settled his roots in Kingston and is giving back to the community where it all began.
